Oral Health In the News....

CHILDREN'S DENTAL HEALTH MONTH RESOURCE

The National Maternal and Child Oral Health Resource Center (OHRC) in collaboration with the MCH Library at Georgetown University released a new edition of its knowledge path about oral health and children and adolescents. Presented in time for Children's Dental Health Month in February, this electronic resource guide points to a selection of current, high-quality resources that analyze data, describe effective programs, and report on policy and research aimed at improving access
to and the quality of oral health for children and adolescents. Separate sections identify resources on specific aspects of oral health including dental sealants, early childhood caries, fluoride varnish, Head Start, child care, school-based education, and school-based care. The final section lists oral health resources for consumers. This knowledge path is intended for use by health professionals, program administrators, educators, policymakers, and consumers who are interested in obtaining timely nformation on this topic. The knowledge path is available at http://www.mchoralhealth.org/knwpathoralhealth.html .

MCH Library knowledge paths on other maternal and child health topics are available at http://www.mchlibrary.info/KnowledgePaths/index.html.

The MCH Library welcomes feedback on the usefulness and value of these knowledge paths. A feedback form is available at
http://www.mchlibrary.info/KnowledgePaths/feedback.html .

The National Maternal and Child Oral Health Resource Center (OHRC) (http://www.mchoralhealth.org) gathers, develops, and shares high-quality information and materials to help states and communities address current and emerging public oral health issues and improve oral health services for infants, children, adolescents, and their families.

The MCH Library (http://mchlibrary.info) is a virtual guide to maternal and child health information. It offers a wide variety of electronic resources, including the MCH Alert, knowledge paths, databases, bibliographies, and other materials developed for health professionals, policymakers, and families. The MCH Library is located at the National Center for Education in Maternal and Child Health (NCEMCH) at Georgetown University.

To receive notification of new resources from the MCH Library and the OHRC in the future, you can subscribe to the MCH Alert (http://mchlibrary.info/alert/default.html ), a weekly electronic newsletter that provides timely reference to research, policy
developments, recently released publications, new programs, and initiatives affecting the MCH community.

Good Oral Health Important Component of Mother and Child Health
FDI World Dental Federation Press Release—April 7, 2005
In recognition of World Health Day 2005, the World Dental Federation (FDI) notes that good oral health is key to this year’s theme “Make Every Mother and Child Count”. Mothers (as all other women) and children are amongst the most vulnerable of all populations around the world. Very often women and children experience higher levels of ill health and limited access to care. Greater prominence needs to be given to equal provision of basic human rights, which include the right to good general and oral health. “Good oral health is a basic human right and inseparable from general health and wellbeing. Only by taking a holistic approach to health promotion, by addressing risk factors that are shared by systemic and oral diseases, can we succeed in achieving improved levels of oral health for mothers and children” said Dr JT Barnard, FDI Executive Director. The FDI World Federation supports action to improve the health of mothers through asserting their basic human rights, including access to health care, education, employment opportunities and safe and healthy environments. The FDI World Federation also endorses the rights of every child as articulated in the UN Declaration on The Rights of the Child, emphasizing the importance of education, safe environments and access to health care. All health professionals, such as physicians, dentists, nurses or midwifes, need to be aware of the serious impact of oral diseases on health, nutrition and wellbeing of mothers and children. The promotion of oral health should to be part of all health education programs and appropriate oral health care services for children and their mothers should be available. The FDI World Dental Federation therefore welcomes and supports the World Health Day theme of “Make every mother and child count” and urges governments and health professional organizations to give more emphasis on health programs addressing the oral needs of mothers and children. Additional information can be found on the FDI Web site at: http://www.fdiworldental.org/public_health/pub_home.html.
