2009 - 2010 RSV Season Recommendations
Updated March 9, 2010

  • Currently RSV activity is very high. All high-risk infants should be receiving Synagis monthly at this point in the season. Dosing will continue monthly until the planned number of doses (one to five, depending upon criteria used) have been completed. Some infants will have received 5 doses within the next weeks.
  • To determine high-risk infants who require Synagis see the page "Synagis consensus criteria" and the 2006 AAP Red Book. Pediatric specialists in Idaho recommend these criteria for selection of high-risk infants. Because of changes in national AAP recommendations, then appeals of denial of preauthorizations may be necessary if there are conflicts in the criteria used. Selection of high-risk infants is ultimately a clinical judgement by the ordering physician.
  • There are a number of changes in the 2009 AAP Committee on Infectious Diseases guidelines. Idaho Medicaid and some private insurance plans decided to follow the national 2009 AAP guidelines http://healthandwelfare.idaho.gov/LinkClick.aspx?fileticket=rYatwNnK8TY%3d&tabid=802&mid=1589
